LEESBURG, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team had an interesting day on Saturday, having both of their originally scheduled games with Mount Mary University and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts cancelled before finally locating York College (PA) as an opponent late in the night. In conditions that felt closer to west-central Minnesota than central Florida, the Cougars fell to the Spartans by a score of 9-1 in six innings.
Through the first two innings, the only hit for either team was a double off the bat of
Autumn Theis. That changed with a two-out rally by York in the bottom of the third. Elle Meyer started things with a triple to right-center and Alyssa Harhigh then reached via an error in the outfield from Minnesota Morris, eventually coming all the way home after the Cougars committed a second error on the play. Daphney Adams then kept the inning alive with a single before Emma Wade homered to make it a 4-0 game heading to the fourth.
York tacked on another two runs in the fourth inning, again capitalizing on a Minnesota Morris error to make it 6-0. The Cougars got on the board in the top of the fifth when
Jasmine Jensen reached on an error, then went to second on a wild pitch. Subsequent groundouts from
Lauren Parsons and
Sierra Stevens brought her in to make it 6-1.
The game came to an end in the sixth when the Spartans loaded the bases with two outs. A single from Adams drove in two to increase the York lead to 8-1 and Wade followed with a single up the middle to drive in Harhigh for the game-winning run.
Despite not giving up an earned run, Dummer took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season.
Grace Penke pitched 2.0 innings of relief and also had the other Minnesota Morris hit in the contest.
The Cougars are back in action on Sunday with a pair of games against Capital University (9:30 a.m. EDT) and Hood College (11:45 a.m. EDT).
