Track & Field Continues Season at UW-La Crosse

A handful of Cougars headed to the Eagle Open on Friday, with Luke Petersen breaking his own school record in the hammer throw.

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris track & field team headed to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday for the Eagle Open. Though there was no team scoring at the event, the Cougars had some solid performances from its small contingent of competitors, including a new school record in the hammer throw.

The lone runner from Minnesota Morris to make the trip on Friday was Brevin O'Connor. Competing in the 800 Meter Run, O'Connor finished in 12th place with a time of 2:08.17.

The best overall finish on the day for a UMN Morris athlete was Jenica Moes in the javelin throw. Moes had a toss of 124-4 (37.91 meters) to take second place in the event. She added a 15th-place finish in the discus with a distance of 120-5 (36.70 meters). Jennifer Steinbring was 27th in the discus with a throw of 100-9 (30.70 meters). Steinbring was also 29th in the hammer throw at 98-6 (30.02 meters), while teammate Hailey Gill had a 13th-place finish, posting a distance of 142-11 (43.56 meters).

Back on the men's side, Luke Petersen broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 168-4 (51.31 meters), putting him ninth on the evening. In that same event, Justin Robinson was 13 at 154-3 (47.01 meters), Cody Nye was 19th at 137-10 (42.01 meters), and Jerad Nelson was 26th at 123-1 (37.52 meters). 

Nye also took part in the shot put and had a best effort of 48-11.00 (14.91 meters) to take eighth. Bryan Zepeda finished 15th in the shot put with a heave of 42-10.25 (13.06 meters). Zepeda also took 18th in the discus with a throw of 126-7 (38.58 meters). 

In one final event, Conor Thornbrugh finished fourth in the men's javelin with a distance of 140-0 (42.67 meters).

Minnesota Morris will be back at UW-La Crosse on May 19th for the UW-La Crosse Final Qualifier beginning at 3 p.m.
