MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team came up short for a second day in a row with a tight 72-66 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday at James Gremmels Court. The loss sends the Cougars to 7-6 (3-2 UMAC), while the Yellowjackets leap into a tie for first place in the conference at 8-6 (4-1 UMAC).
The opening minutes of the game were back-and-forth, with
Blake Munson scoring seven early points to help Minnesota Morris maintain an 11-11 tie with six minutes gone. A 15-2 run from UW-Superior followed however, putting the Yellowjackets on top, 26-13. Josef Fahrenholtz was at the center of the action for UW-Superior and another bucket from him gave the Yellowjackets a 28-16 lead.
Out of nowhere, Minnesota Morris went on a 16-0 surge spurred by 10 points from
Pal Dak to take a 32-28 lead with under three minutes to go in the half. Answering right back, UW-Superior closed the half on an 8-0 run that included a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Joey Barker to take a 37-34 halftime edge.
Scores from Dak and
Jaret Johnson in the opening minute of the second half brought the Cougars within a point, 39-38, but Minnesota Morris was never able to tie or take the lead the rest of the way. UW-Superior was able to maintain its lead by going 12-of-15 from the foul line in the second. By comparison, the Cougars went just 4-of-5 from the line in the entire contest.
Despite being down by as much as nine points in the closing minutes, Minnesota Morris refused to go away and a Johnson three-pointer brought the Cougars back to within four at 70-66 with a minute to go. After a couple of empty trips and a pair of free throws from the Yellowjackets, the visitors closed it out for a six-point victory.
Dak finished with a team-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Noah Kannegiesser finished with 14, while Johnson had 10 points, six rebounds, and five steals.
Minnesota Morris returns to action on Friday night in Mankato with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against UMAC co-leader Bethany Lutheran College.
