MAYVILLE, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team quickly fell behind Mayville State University on Tuesday night and could never make up the gap in an 82-57 loss to the Comets, dropping the Cougars to 3-3 on the season.
Following five points from Mayville State to open the game, Minnesota Morris got on the board with three minutes gone on a
Blake Munson three-pointer. However, that 5-3 deficit was as close as it would get, with the Comets answering back with a 10-0 run to take a 15-3 edge. A Mayville State lead that grew as large as 19 points in the first half was cut to 11 with an 8-0 Cougar run over the last three minutes before JR White hit a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give MSU a 43-29 lead at the half.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Mayville State extended its advantage to 55-33. Though
Ian Fahje and Munson would combine for five straight and shrink the deficit to 17, the Comets would soon have the lead back above 20 where it would mostly remain the rest of the way.
Munson was the lone double-figure scorer on the night for Minnesota Morris, finishing with 14.
Gus Gunderson added eight and Fahje needed only eight minutes to score seven points.
Minnesota Morris hosts Mayville State in a return game at James Gremmels Court on Nov. 28 starting at 7 p.m.
