MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team won its fourth straight on Monday night with a 70-67 victory over Waldorf University, improving to 7-4 overall on the season.
Waldorf jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening minute of the contest, but
Gus Gunderson answered back with consecutive triples to put Minnesota Morris ahead. Another Gunderson three erased an 18-16 deficit for the Cougars and started a 9-0 run that was capped with a
Jarrett Kujava steal and layup to stake UMN Morris to a 25-18 edge. A three-point play from
LeRoy Staples-Fairbanks and a Kujava jumper in the final minute took the lead to double-digits before Waldorf scored late in the half to slice the Cougar lead to 40-31 at the break.
The Warriors came out of the locker room with an immediate 8-0 burst to pull within a point. The Cougars never gave up the lead, but Waldorf did tie the game up at 48-48 before an 11-0 run from Minnesota Morris that scored entirely by Gunderson and
Pal Dak.
Despite facing another double-digit deficit, Waldorf refused to go away and made one last push to get back into it, knotting the score up at 66-66 in the final minute. Dak got to the rim and finished coming out of a timeout with 21 seconds to play. After a foul in the paint on the other end with four ticks left, Ugo Ejiofor missed his first free throw before rolling the second in. Dak was fouled on the subsequent inbounds pass and coolly made a pair of foul shots to extend the lead to three. A last-gasp Warrior three-pointer was off the mark to give the Cougars the victory.
Dak finished the night with a team-high 24 points. Gunderson added 21, hitting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kujava scored eight points and nabbed 10 rebounds.
Minnesota Morris is off until January 2 when the Cougars will travel to St. Cloud State University in a contest that will count as an exhibition for the Cougars. UMN Morris is then back at James Gremmels Court the following night, taking on Valley City State at 6 p.m.
