Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday night in the season opener.
Competing against a NCAA Division II opponent, the three doubles matches were worth one point rather than the usual three that the Cougars will compete under the rest of the season.
Kiley Rodarmel and
Allison Bruhn suffered a 2-6 loss in the No. 1 match, while
Abby Burquest and
Valerie Gail (No. 2) and
Marybeth Tautges and
Ava Weber (No. 3) each lost their matches by a 1-6 score to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Minnesota Crookston finished things off by winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Rodarmel occupied the No. 1 spot in the lineup, but lost 1-6, 0-6. Burquest was defeated 2-6, 1-6 at No. 2. Three of the other matches were 0-6, 0-6 losses for the Cougars.
Competing at No. 4 singles, Gail forced Michelle Swyter to a third-set tiebreak before coming up short in a 3-6, 6-3, 9-11 defeat.
Both the men's and women's tennis programs will be back in action on Sunday morning as they travel to Owatonna for a neutral-site match against Buena Vista University.
