Tennis Teams Swept by Morningside

Both Cougar programs suffered 7-0 losses to the Mustangs on Friday afternoon.

Box Score SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's and women's tennis programs both lost to Morningside University by scores of 7-0 on Friday afternoon. The men's team falls to 1-1 on the season, while the women's team is now 1-2 overall.

In the men's match, Morningside swept doubles action with 6-0 wins in all three to score a point. Matt Gearou and Clayton Klema made up the No. 1 doubles team, Marshall O'Meara and Will Marsan were the No. 2 team, and Max Gmuender and Muthu Meenakshisundaram were the No. 3 team. The Mustangs also swept the six singles matches, notching four 6-0, 6-0 victories along the way. O'Meara at No. 3 and Marsan at No. 4 were the two Cougar players to take a game along the way.

The women's match was much closer, but Morningside still managed to collect all the points. Kiley Rodarmel and Allison Bruhn were defeated, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Abby Burquest and Valerie Gail came up short, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, Megan Arens and Marybeth Tautges were knocked off, 6-2. Those three doubles victories gave Morningside a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

The Mustangs collected relatively straightforward victories at Nos. 1, 2, and 3 singles over Rodarmel (1-6, 3-6), Burquest (1-6, 2-6), and Bruhn (1-6, 2-6). Gail had a battle in the first set of the No. 4 match but ultimately succumbed 5-7, 0-6. Arens and Tautges both went to third-set tiebreakers before their Morningside opponent prevailed. At No. 5, Arens suffered a 6-2, 2-6, 6-10 defeat. Tautges fell by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 7-10 at No. 6.

Minnesota Morris is back in action on Feb. 25 with a pair of matches in Fargo, N.D. First up is a non-conference match with the hosts, Concordia College-Moorhead. That will be followed by a UMAC match with the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the afternoon.
