Women’s Track & Field Rises to Third at UMAC Championships

The Cougars leapt up one spot in the final team standings, finishing the two-day event with 93.5 points.

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's track & field team rose one spot in the final standings at the 2023 UMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Cougars finished the meet with 93.5 points and overtook Martin Luther College, who they had trailed heading into Saturday's action.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior ended as the team champion of the meet with 171.5 points. The Yellowjackets were followed by Bethany Lutheran College in second place with 143 points. The Cougars were next up in third place, with Crown College in fourth (86), Martin Luther in fifth (79), the University of Northwestern in sixth (36), and North Central University in seventh (22).

Entering Saturday with 38.5 points, Minnesota Morris added 55 more to its total in the nine events that were staged. The Cougars had one conference champion on Saturday, with Maggie Landwer taking the pole vault crown by clearing 8-4.25 (2.55m). Siri Overturf also scored in that event for Minnesota Morris, finishing fifth by clearing 6-10.75 (2.10m).

In track events, Grace Hambike and Nibras Luqman had advanced into the final of the 60 Meter Dash in yesterday's preliminary races. In the final, Hambike ran an 8.60 to finish fifth, while Luqman turned in an 8.75 to take eighth. Hambike also ran in the final of the 60 Meter Hurdles and took fourth in 11.02. In another sprint event, Elizabeth Frias was fifth in the 200 Meter Dash in 28.52. 

Moving to distance, McKenna Langerud was fourth (11:30.60) and Ilsa Hoaglund was fifth (11:37.52) in the 3,000 Meters. In the day's lone relay, the 4 x 400 Meter Relay team of Kim Peters, Paige Diekmann, Triniti Neuhart, and Frias took fourth in 4:35.40.

In other field events, Anna Briggs was the runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 37-6.75 (11.45m). Kim Peters was also fourth in the triple jump at 30-7.75 (9.34m). 

Minnesota Morris continues the indoor season on March 4 with select members of the team vying for a spot in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships by competing at last chance meets hosted by Ripon College and Wartburg College.
