WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team shook off the cold but couldn't get much going offensively on Monday in a pair of defeats against Roger Williams University and Saint Mary's College (Ind.). The Hawks posted a 6-1 win in the first game of the day and the Belles later had a 9-1 win in six innings.
Minnesota Morris is back at it tomorrow with a 9 a.m. (EDT) start against Framingham State University, followed by a 2 p.m. (EDT) first pitch with SUNY Oswego.
Roger Williams 6, Minnesota Morris 1
Raegen Germano issued six free passes to Cougar hitters, but allowed just two hits in the game to go the distance and help Roger Williams win the first game of the day.
Adrianna Johnson (0-2) went 4.2 innings but took the loss for Minnesota Morris.
Emma MacLean played a big part in the success for RWU, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Already ahead 2-0 after the second inning, MacLean drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning before adding RBI singles in both the fifth and seventh innings.
Trailing 6-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Minnesota Morris put together a threat as
Olivia Losee and
Sophie Diver both walked. With two away, another free pass was issued to
Anna Baumann to load the bases before
Sierra Stevens singled back up the middle to drive in the lone Cougar run of the game.
Besides Stevens' RBI single, the other hit in the contest for Minnesota Morris came from
Autumn Theis.
Saint Mary's 9, Minnesota Morris 1 (6 innings)
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Minnesota Morris came back to tie the score in the top of the second.
Alice Wilkinson led off the inning with a single and moved to third on back-to-back bunts from
Sophie Diver and Baumann. Wilkinson then scored on a passed ball to make it 1-1.
That proved to be as good as it got in game two for the Cougars. Saint Mary's scored twice in the bottom of the second, three more times in the third, and then three more in the sixth to end the game via the run rule at 9-1.
Tori Nichols had the other hit in the game for Minnesota Morris.
Morgan Wilhelm (0-3) threw 3.0 innings and took the loss in the circle for the Cougars.
