MINNEAPOLIS – After a frantic finish to the season that included a play-in victory on Tuesday afternoon to reach the UMAC Tournament, the Minnesota Morris women's tennis team fell to Principia College, 5-0, in the UMAC semifinals.
A 3-0 start to the match from Principia proved to be too much to overcome. The Panthers jumped on top with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles over the UMN Morris pair of
Megan Arens and
Marybeth Tautges. The matches at Nos. 1 and 2 wrapped up almost at the same time, with Principia extending its lead with a win at No. 2 over the Cougar duo of
Valerie Gall and
Abby Burquest (8-6) and at No. 1 over
Kiley Rodarmel and
Allison Bruhn (8-5).
Five of the six singles matches got underway, but the first two matches to finish both went in Principia's favor, so the rest were left unfinished. At No. 2 singles, Saray Hernandez Cisneros posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Burquest. At No. 5 singles, Kimberly Peterson topped Arens, 6-1, 6-1. In one of the matches left unfinished, Gall had just taken the first set at No. 4 over Kelsie Huss but didn't get the chance to continue.
The Cougars conclude their season at 9-7 overall. Principia moves on to face the University of Northwestern in tomorrow's championship match.
