Four Men’s Tennis Player Earn UMAC Accolades

Matt Gearou led a four-person contingent of Cougar men’s tennis players with Second Team All-UMAC honors in 2023.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's tennis team had four individuals earn UMAC recognition as the conference released its postseason awards on Wednesday.

Matt Gearou, a sophomore from Zimmerman, Minn., was named Second Team All-UMAC in 2023. As the No. 1 singles player and as part of a few No. 1 doubles pairings, Gearou was 1-9 in singles and doubles while taking on some of the top opposition the conference had to offer.

Juniors Carver Hammond and Marshall O'Meara were each named Honorable Mention All-UMAC. Carver, hailing from Bloomington, Minn., was 3-7 in singles play, splitting time between Nos. 2-4, and 2-7 in doubles action. O'Meara, from Minneapolis, was 2-8 in singles while mostly playing at No. 3 and 2-8 in doubles while playing mostly at No. 2.

Each team in the UMAC has one individual named the winner of a Sportsmanship Award. This year's recipient for Minnesota Morris is Max Gmuender, a sophomore from Biel, Switzerland.

The Cougars finished the 2023 season with a 2-11 overall record, going 1-9 in UMAC play.
