MADISON, S.D. - The University of Minnesota Morris Cougars took on the Dakota State Trojans in a tough road game. The Cougars came away from the day with an 0-4 overall record on the season.
The Cougars' offense kicked off the game with four points off the fingertips of Claire Stark to pave the way to a 13-7 lead halfway through the first quarter. Jordan Ohman-Bjork found Katelyn Lindberg around the arch for a clutch bucket. The Trojan's offense started to gain momentum after dropping a two and three to close the gap to one. Minnesota Morris lost their lead as Dakota State went on a 6-2 scoring run and closed out the first quarter with a 20-15 lead.
The Trojans started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 that was stopped with a made bucket from Stark to keep the Cougars in striking range. Anna Meyers found the bottom of the net on a jumper to keep the score close at 19-29. Dakota State found their rhythm in the remainder of the second quarter, going on a 16-4 run to bury Minnesota Morris in a 22 point deficit heading into halftime.
Shelby Mortenson kicked off the scoring in the second half, assisted by Maddy Grove, and earned a block on the other end of the court. The remainder of the third quarter proved difficult for the Cougars as they were outscored 11-32 by the Trojans while going 6-13 from the field. Dakota State held a 77-36 lead going into the final quarter of the matchup.
It was the Cougars who outscored the Trojans in the fourth quarter, kicking things off with a 10-5 scoring run. The two teams traded points back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, with the Cougars winning the quarter 27-24. Minnesota Morris was led by Stark, who scored eleven of her twenty points in the fourth in the paint and at the charity stripe. The Cougars still trailed by 38 when the final buzzer sounded, falling 63-101.
While dropping twenty points on the day, Stark also totaled up six rebounds and tacked on a block. She went 8-10 from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line in her 27 minutes of play. Myers dropped ten points off the bench for the Cougars and added on two boards. Lindberg made her first start of the season for Minnesota Morris, dropping nine points and nabbing five rebounds on the defensive end of the floor.
The Cougars will head to Bemidji State University Nov. 19 for a 5:30 pm matchup against the Division 2 opponent.
