Women’s Basketball Battles on the Road

MAYVILLE, N.D. - The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team faced a tough road loss against Mayville State University. The Comets outscored the Cougars in every corner and forced 29 turnovers on the night to make the Cougars 1-7 on the season so far.

The Cougars struggled early in the first quarter against Mayville, falling into a 2-18 deficit before commencing a 8-3 run to head into the second quarter trailing 10-21. The Comets kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter, shooting 50% from the three point line and jumping out to a 45-25 lead over Minnesota Morris heading into halftime. 

Both teams battled for buckets in the third quarter of the matchup, going back and forth in scoring. The Cougars continued to battle to close the scoring gap heading into the final quarter of the game, but trailed by 27 points to wrap up the third quarter. Heading in the final quarter of this ball game, Minnesota Morris struggled to match points with the Comets. The Cougars were outscored in the fourth quarter, and trailed 55-98 at the conclusion of the game.

Maddy Grove dropped sixteen points and nabbed five rebounds for Minnesota Morris while going 6-7 from the charity stripe. Claire Stark and Shelby Mortenson each earned eight points and eight rebounds in addition to both being dominant presences in the paint. Anna Myers came off the bench and dropped six points while Gabby Randt also came off the bench and pulled in six rebounds. 

The Cougars will get a chance to face Mayville State again on their home turf in a 7:30 pm matchup on Dec. 3.
