MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team hosted the Oak Hills Christian College Wolfpack in a matchup on James Gremmels Court. The Cougars came away from the game with a 87-46 victory, moving to 2-5 on the season with three games left before conference play begins.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 14-5 lead in this matchup, hitting shots around the perimeter and inside the paint. Dom Aguilar kicked off the scoring by splashing a three, followed by two layups from Jase Nelson. Minnesota Morris kept their foot on the gas, running the floor and taking a commanding twenty point lead with just over five minutes remaining in the half thanks to two made shots at the charity stripe by Carvin Fish. Tarik Iyob sprinted the floor for a fastbreak layup and knocked down two free throws to take the Cougars to a 22 point lead. After back and forth buckets from both teams, Minnesota Morris held a 47-26 lead going into the second half.
Scoring got off to a slow start in the second half, but it was Aguilar who got things going with a three pointer assisted by James "Juice" Hughes. A 19-10 run in the first ten minutes of the second half put the Cougars up 66-36. Fish and Nelson went on a scoring run of their own, scoring nine points between the two of them in a two minute stretch and pushing the Cougar lead to 38 points. Minnesota Morris, running away with the game, finished with a final score of 87 while Oak Hills scored 46.
Fish posted a double-double in this matchup, scoring thirteen points and hauling in twelve rebounds on the day. Nelson was close to one as well, dropping twelve points and earning seven rebounds. Both Fish and Nelson shot 100% on the day for the Cougars. Dak earned fourteen points of his own to lead Minnesota Morris in scoring.
The Cougars will take their home court one more time before conference play begins, hosting Saint John's University Dec. 9 at 5:30 PM.
