Five from Swimming & Diving Programs Named Academic All-District

The Cougars had four women’s swimmers earn this academic honor, as well as one from the first-year men’s program.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's and women's swimming & diving programs had five individuals earn College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District accolades on Tuesday.

From the women's team, Shannon Dougherty, Abby Doyle, Hannah Wellens, and Natalie West earned the honor, while Louis Freeman from the men's team did the same.

Dougherty earned All-LAC honors three times in February at the Liberal Arts Championships by virtue of her finishes in relay events for the Cougars. She also had fourth-place finishes in both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. Doyle had fifth-place individual finishes in the 500 Freestyle, 1650 Freestyle, and 400 IM, while West was sixth in the 1650 Freestyle and 200 Backstroke. For the men's team, Freeman was All-LAC in two relay events, plus posted a sixth-place finish in the 200 Freestyle.

In the classroom, Dougherty is a sophomore Elementary Education major with a 3.83 cumulative GPA. Doyle is a junior Biology major who carries a 3.95 GPA. Wellens is also a junior and majors in Statistics and Human Services with a 3.99 GPA. West is a sophomore with a 3.81 GPA while majoring in Psychology. Rounding out the honorees for Minnesota Morris, Freeman is a sophomore academically who has a 3.53 GPA with a Psychology major.

To be nominated for Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must meet a high standard in both athletics and academics. A minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA for anyone who has completed at least one year of progress towards their degrees is required academically. Furthermore, nominated individuals must compete in four competitions or finish top eight at a conference meet.
