ELLENDALE, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team defeated the Trinity Bible College Lions on the road. Minnesota Morris overtook the Lions in the last minute of the game to secure victory.
Trinity Bible established a lead early in the matchup, finding a two point gap with 17 minutes to go. The Lions kept the Cougars at bay, holding onto their lead and making it difficult for Minnesota Morris' offense to gain momentum. Brian LaRoche Jr. was able to bring things to a three point gap with 12 minutes left by hitting an outside three to draw the score to 14-17. With both teams consistently scoring, the score ticked higher but the Lions still held onto their 45-42 lead at the half.
Minnesota Morris was quick to tie things up in the second half with a jumper from Carvin Fish. Now tied 50-50, LaRoche Jr. capitalized and scored seven points for the Cougars to establish the first lead for the Cougars since the very beginning of the game. Finding the momentum they were missing in the first half, Minnesota Morris quickly created a comfortable 70-60 gap with nine minutes remaining in the half. The Lions would not go down easy and fought their way back to a tie in the final minute of the game. Gustav Gunderson drew a foul to head to the line, knocking down one shot. Pal Dak was fouled with 13 seconds on the clock and knocked down both shots from the charity stripe. With those three points, Minnesota Morris secured their 93-90 win.
Gunderson led the Cougars with 19 points, closely followed by Dak and Dom Aguilar who both ended the night with 16. LaRoche Jr. came off the bench and dropped 15 for Minnesota Morris. Fish was the final Cougar in double digits with 12 points.
Minnesota Morris continues UMAC play in a home matchup against Crown College Jan. 22. The Cougars are scheduled for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
