Champions Fall: Women’s Basketball Faces Defeat in Rematch of 2024 UMAC Championship

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a rematch of the 2024 UMAC Tournament Championship game. The Cougars fell to the Yellowjackets in a 42-64 final score.

Minnesota Morris controlled the game early on with Maddy Grove and Claire Stark leading the charge. With a six point lead with 3:43 to go in the first quarter, the Cougars were unable to stop the 10-0 scoring run that pushed the Yellowjackets to a 14-10 lead. Minnesota Morris was able to keep things close in the second quarter but, after being scored 12-10, trailed their UMAC opponent by six points going into halftime.

Wisconsin-Superior established a significant lead in the third quarter, getting up by ten points halfway through. The Cougars were unable to come up with a response, and faced a 34-50 deficit heading in the final quarter. Despite a strong defensive effort from Minnesota Morris, women's basketball was outscored 8-14 in the fourth quarter and faced an insurmountable 22 point gap at the final buzzer.

Grove led the Cougars in scoring with 11 points on the day, followed by Shelby Mortenson who dropped eight for Minnesota Morris.

Women's basketball will head to Bethany Lutheran College (Jan. 29 at 7:15 pm) before returning home to take on Northland College (Feb. 1 at 2:45 pm).
