Cougars Start Road Stint with Three Away Games

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team is back in action with three road games this week.
 
The Cougars open the stretch at Concordia College (Minn.) on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. On Friday and Saturday, UMM will compete in the Buena Vista Tournament. The tournament begins with the Cougars taking on Nebraska Wesleyan University at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by a matchup against host Buena Vista University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Minnesota Morris opened the season by hosting the College of St. Scholastica. The Cougars mounted a comeback effort but ultimately fell, 84-70. Matt Thompson led UMM with 31 points and earned UMAC Player of the Week honors after his first game with the Cougars. Kaden Pieper recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Thompson also led the team defensively with three blocks.
 
Concordia opens its season on Wednesday. The Cobbers are coming off a 12-14 overall record and went 11-14 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tyler Bormann enters his sixth season as CC's head coach. Jackson Loge, the team's second-leading scorer last season with 355 points, returns for Concordia. Last year, the Cobbers defeated UMM 69-62 and hold a narrow 11-7 advantage in the all-time series.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan started its season 0-1 after falling to No. 18 University of Wisconsin–Platteville, 78-62. Last season, the Prairie Wolves went 20-7 overall and 12-4 in the American Rivers Conference. Head coach Dale Wellman enters his 12th season at NWU. In the season opener, Christian Winn led the team with 15 points, followed by Amun-Ra Collins and Neal Mosser with 11 each.
 
Buena Vista begins its season this weekend after finishing 12-13 overall and 7-9 in the A-R-C last year. Jeff Horner takes over in his first season as the Beavers' head coach. BVU played an exhibition game two weeks ago, defeating Midland University 88-84. Carter Sievers, who averaged 13.0 points per game last season and ranked third on the team in scoring, returns for his junior year.
