UMM last competed three weeks ago at Hamline University, where both the men's and women's teams came away with victories. The men were led by
Ben Caron and
John Gulon, who each recorded two individual first-place finishes. Caron won the 200-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly, while Gulon finished first in the 100-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle. The duo also teamed up with
Ethan Bad Heart Bull and
Dillon Thorstad to win the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Â
Brynna York earned a pair of first-place finishes in the one- and three-meter diving events to help secure the win for the Cougar women. Minnesota Morris also added nine first-place finishes in swimming events.
Shannon Dougherty won both the 100-yard IM and the 100-yard freestyle, and she joined
Rhio Fay,
McKenna Falak, and
Faith Hamm to win the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Â
This will be the third time the men's teams have competed against Morningside, with the Mustangs winning the previous two meets. Last season, Gulon had UMM's lone individual win for the men in the 100-yard backstroke, while
Austin Dunn added a runner-up finish in the 200-yard IM.
Â
In last year's matchup, the Cougar women defeated Morningside, 141–41. Dougherty,
Kaitlyn Mello, Hamm, and
Eve Zimmerman opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, and the Cougars cruised to victory with eight additional event wins.
Â
This season, the Morningside men's team is 3–2 but enters the meet on a two-meet skid, falling to Midland University and Saint Ambrose University. The Mustangs' women's team is 2–4 and is coming off a narrow 71–70 win over Midland last week.
