OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team returned to action after the winter break at the BSN Winter Classic, falling to No. 3 University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh 63–43 Sunday evening in Oshkosh, Wis.
The Cougars got on the board first after
Grace Perry found
Claire Stark in the paint for the team's first basket. UW–Oshkosh responded with four straight points, but
Gianna Klarenbeek put UMM back on top with the first three-pointer of the game. Another four-point run by the Titans reclaimed the lead before
Shelby Mortenson ended the rally with a free throw. Just before the two-minute mark, Perry connected from behind the arc to give the Cougars a 9–8 advantage. Perry added a free throw, and Stark capped the quarter scoring for Minnesota Morris with a layup. In the final seconds of the quarter, UW–Oshkosh made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 12–12 heading into the second quarter.
UW–Oshkosh opened the second quarter with an early three-pointer.
Maddy Grove kept the Cougars within reach by going 2-for-2 from the free throw line. The Titans built a five-point lead midway through the quarter, their largest advantage to that point. Mortenson answered with two more free throws to make it a one-possession game, and Grove later cut the deficit to one. UW–Oshkosh closed the half on a 13-point run to take a 32–18 lead into halftime.
Itzel Salazar got to the free throw line to open the third quarter, converting both attempts. Perry added another free throw, and Salazar scored the Cougars' first field goal of the second half. The teams traded three-pointers, with Grove connecting for UMM.
Anna Myers scored her first points of the game with a layup in the third quarter. After trailing by 19, Grove helped chip away at the lead, capping a five-point run with a three-point play. Stark and Myers added free throws down the stretch, but UW–Oshkosh knocked down a late three to extend the lead to 50–34 at the end of the third.
Grove opened the fourth quarter by finding Stark in the paint for a layup. Stark followed with four more points to pull the Cougars within 12. Mortenson added a layup and a free throw to complete a three-point play. The Titans closed the game with the final nine points, securing the 63–43 victory.
Stark led the Cougars with 12 points, while Grove also reached double figures with 10. Minnesota Morris shot 31.6 percent from the field, with Stark leading the way at 4-of-7 shooting. Perry recorded a team-high two assists.
Defensively, Klarenbeek, Stark, and
Brooke Ver Steeg tied for the team lead with five rebounds each. UMM tallied five steals, with Myers and Ver Steeg collecting two apiece, and Grove recorded the Cougars' lone block.
Minnesota Morris wraps up the BSN Winter Classic on Monday with a 1 p.m. tipoff against (RV) Ripon College.
