NEW ULM, Minn. - Going up against a team that was 10-1 on their home court, the University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team had their work cut out for them. After trailing at halftime, the Cougars fought their way to a dominant win in a 27-11 fourth quarter.
Minnesota Morris led most of the first quarter in this game, before Martin Luther College found their groove from the three point line and knocked down three triples to jump to an 18-14 lead. The Knights hung onto their lead through the second quarter, increasing it to seven points at the halftime buzzer.
With the outcome of the game still up in the air, both teams came out of halftime looking to put it away. The Cougars' defense kept Martin Luther at bay, but the Minnesota Morris offense struggled to score. The fourth quarter was when things started clicking for the Cougars and they quickly tied the score up at 49-49 thanks to buckets from
Maddy Grove and
Claire Stark. After taking the lead, Minnesota Morris was able to hold onto it, leading by nine points at the final buzzer.
Grove dropped a 29-point game and added on six rebounds while going 9-10 from the free throw line. Stark was solid in the post for the Cougars, coming close to a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Minnesota Morris continues their battle for entrance into the conference tournament with a home matchup against Bethany Lutheran College. The game is scheduled for a 7:15 pm tip-off on Feb. 19.
