Women’s Basketball Finishes Season in Heartbreaking Home Court Loss

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team fell in their final game of the season, missing the UMAC tournament by just two points. The Cougars were unable to overcome the University of Wisconsin - Superior in the final seconds of the game.

The Cougars were dominant in the first quarter of this critical matchup, with Maddy Grove and Shelby Mortenson coming together for 15 of the teams 17 points. Keeping things rolling in the second quarter, Minnesota Morris locked the Yellowjackets down on defense to hold them to 10 points. The Cougars' offense showed off their scoring ability to post a 30-26 lead heading into halftime.

UW-Superior came out of the halftime break fired up, taking back the lead early and holding onto it the entirety of the fourth quarter. Minnesota Morris scrambled to put points on board and keep the game close, but faced a five point deficit heading into the final quarter of the game. Grove tied things up again at 54-54 with 3:47 to go in the back-and-forth matchup. The Yellowjackets answered back in force, but Grove tied the game up again with a three-point bucket with 15 seconds on the clock. The Cougars were unable to find a bucket in the final seconds, and UW-Superior snuck past the home team on two free throws.

Grove led the game in scoring with a 34 point night, adding on 4 rebounds. Mortenson dropped 12 of her own points and pulled in nine rebounds for the Cougars.
