Dominant Victory: Women’s Basketball Triumphs 64-51

SAINT BONIFACIUS - The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team found a decisive victory against Crown College, moving to 6-3 in UMAC play on the season. The Cougars look to defend their three game win streak at the University of Northwestern Feb. 8 in a 2:45 pm matchup.

The Cougars got off to a slow start in this conference matchup before Maddy Grove went on a 7-0 run on her own to put Minnesota Morris up 11-3 over the Polars. Reece Wassink closed out the scoring in the first quarter with a jumper and three pointer of her own, maintaining a nine point lead at the first break of the game. Crown sparked a 13-2 run early in the second quarter, gaining a brief lead before Grove tied things up. Unwilling to relinquish their lead a second time, the Cougars wrapped up the first half leading by seven.

With the score too close for comfort to kick off the second half, Minnesota Morris jumped out to a 10 point lead early and held on to the double-digit scoring gap. Anna Myers pushed it to 16 in the final minute with a three pointer, and the Cougars boasted a 51-35 lead heading into the final quarter. In an attempt to get back into the game, the Polars locked the visitors up on defense in the fourth quarter, but were not able to score enough to cut the scoring gap down. In the end, Minnesota Morris led by a 13 point margin to take home the victory.

Grove dropped 20 points on the night for the Cougars, and added nine rebounds to her stat line. Myers was just behind her teammate with a 19 point game. Shelby Mortenson nabbed 10 rebounds for Minnesota Morris on the night.
