Three Cougars Secure All-UMAC Honors

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris had three women's basketball players who were awarded Upper Midwest Athletic Conference postseason accolades after their 9-5 conference season. Maddy Grove took home Player of the Year and First Team All-UMAC awards while Shelby Mortenson and Iztel Salazar received Honorable Mention All-UMAC and Defensive All-UMAC honors respectively. 

Grove, the hometown hero from Morris, Minn., played guard this season for the Cougars and secured both Player of the Year and First Team All-UMAC honors in addition to multiple Player of the Week awards (2/11, 2/18, 2/25). Her scoring average of 18.2 points per game placed her at the top of the UMAC in overall scoring, fourth in the UMAC in field goal percentage, and third in free throw percentage. Grove shot the ball at a clip of 45.4% from the field, 30.3% beyond the arc, and 80.6% from the free throw line. She pulled in 123 rebounds (76 defensive) and added on 56 assists, six blocks, and 37 steals to more than earn her accolades.

Mortenson, a junior forward from Granite Falls, Minn., earned a place on the Honorable Mention All-UMAC team for her performance this season. She pulled in 164 rebounds (107 defensive) to average 6.8 rebounds per game. This impressive average earned her a place as sixth in the UMAC in rebounding. Mortenson also added on an average of 6.7 points per game and shot at a clip of 44.7% from the field. She added 23 assists, 35 blocks, and 18 steals to her season stat line and was third in the UMAC with 1.5 blocks per game.

Salazar is a junior guard from Long Prairie, Minn. and made her debut as a Cougar this season. Her defensive performance this season earned her a place on the Defensive All-UMAC team. Salazar's 1.6 steals per game and her 2.4 assists per game put her fifth in the UMAC in both categories. She averaged 6.9 points per game for Minnesota Morris and shot the ball 38.8% from the field and 35.2% from the three point line. Additionally, Salazar's 79.4% shooting from the free throw line put her at fifth in the UMAC. 

Reece Wassink, a junior forward from Edgerton, Minn., was named to the UMAC All-Sportsmanship team.
