Softball Falls Twice to Concordia-Moorhead

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris took on Concordia College - Moorhead in a cold and windy non-conference matchup. The Cougars would fall to the Cobbers in both games, being unable to close the two point gaps and secure victories. Minnesota Morris continues play with a second non-conference matchup against Hamline University on Apr. 6 and will resume UMAC competition Apr. 12-13 against Martin Luther College.

Concordia-Moorhead 2, Minnesota Morris 0

The Cobbers opened up the game with a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead over the home team. With both teams struggling to get on base, the game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Concordia-Moorhead scored their second run on a passed ball. The second run was all the Cobbers needed to take the victory, as the Cougars went down in three batters in the bottom of the sixth and seventh inning.

The four hits in game one for Minnesota Morris came courtesy of Olivia Losee, Jillian Anderson, Kennedy Biegler, and Taylor Johnson. Losee and Johnson added on a walk and stolen base respectively. Anna Athey recorded six putouts from behind the plate with Morgan Wilhelm adding on five more from first base. Alyssa Thornton pitched all seven innings for the Cougars and recorded five strikeouts, ten flyouts and four groundouts.

Concordia-Moorhead 13, Minnesota Morris 11

It was the Cougars who kicked off the scoring in game two, bringing in two runs in the second inning. J. Anderson was the first to cross home plate, coming in on a single from Malena Mahoney. Kendra Schmitz scored on the next play on an RBI from Johnson. Concordia-Moorhead was quick to respond with two runs in the next inning to tie things up. The two teams continued to go back-and-forth as Sierra Stevens scored and the Cobbers responded quickly. Tied up at 3-3, both teams were looking to push a few runs over the plate.

Minnesota Morris dropped a four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. Mahoney, Johnson, Stevens, and Losee all scored on consecutive plays as the Cougars kept the bases occupied and looked to rack up the score. The Cobbers knocked in five runs in the top of the fifth and took an 8-7 lead that went unanswered. Another five-run inning in the sixth pushed Concordia-Moorhead's lead to 13-7. Determined to make up some ground, the Cougar offense totaled up three hits in the bottom of the sixth while runs came in from Isabelle Derhak and Losee. With one more inning to score in, Minnesota Morris worked at the plate and put runners on base. Mahoney made her way around the bases and scored on a single from Stevens. Stevens then earned a run of her own as she stole second and scored on a long double from Losee. The inning ended on the next play with the Cougars staring at a two-point deficit.

There were multiple Cougars with both hits and RBIs in game two to total up 13 hits and 11 RBIs as a team. Losee had the lone double of the game, while Stevens added on another stolen base. J. Anderson reeled up seven putouts from first base for the Minnesota Morris defense.
