MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris finished off their weekend against Martin Luther College with a two-game sweep to take the series 3-0. The Cougars totaled up 16 hits and runs on the day, advancing to a 5-4 record in UMAC play following their weekend victories. The action will continue for Cougar Softball with a trip to Superior, Wis. to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The single match will be played on Apr. 17 with the doubleheader games played on Apr. 18.Â

The Cougars knocked open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, following that up with two more runs in the second to take a quick 3-0 lead. Sierra Stevens scored the first run of the day while Malena Mahoney and Kendra Schmitz scored in the second inning. Bats began flying for the Knights in the top of the fourth as they totaled up three hits and four runs to take their only lead of the weekend at 4-3. Anna Athey and Taylor Johnson took the lead back for Minnesota Morris with runs in the bottom of the fourth. Neither team would score for the remainder of the game, and the Cougars held their 5-4 lead as the game came to a close.Â
Stevens led the Cougars at the plate, going 2-4 and bringing in one run. Mahoney and Stevens also picked up stolen bases for Minnesota Morris. Schmitz, at first base for the Cougars, nabbed eight putouts to lead the defense. Morgan Wilhelm earned the win, totaling up three strikeouts, eight flyouts, and nine groundouts on the day.Â

The Cougars kicked off the sweep with runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the third. Picking up two more runs in the third inning, Minnesota Morris powered ahead at the plate. The fourth inning secured the victory for the Cougars as they totaled up a whopping seven runs. Johnson claimed run number six with a homerun that brought in her and Ashley Albert. With a last chance to score, Martin Luther fell in a one-two-three inning to wrap things up.
Thornton, Mahoney, and Johnson all came away from the game with two hits as Johnson led the team with 4 RBIs. Stevens added to her school record with two more stolen bases. Athey was the cause of eight outs at home plate for the defense. Thornton led the team to victory from the circle as she pitched a no-hitter. She totaled up seven strikeouts, four flyouts, and four groundouts.Â
