Mike Weatherly named Acting Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris is pleased to announce that Mike Weatherly has been named the Acting Head Coach for the Men's and Women's Golf teams.

Weatherly takes over the programs following the retirement of Jana Koehler, who spent 25 years with the Women's Golf team and seven years with the Men's Golf team. Koehler coached the 2022-23 Women's Golf team to a UMAC Conference Championship and reached the NCAA Championship. Over her tenure Koehler earned many coaching accolades, some including UMAC Coach of the Decade and UMAC Coach of the Year.

"I am very excited to have Mike leading the Cougar golf teams," said Director of Athletics Matt Johnson. "His knowledge of the game, and his natural ability to form meaningful relationships made him the ideal candidate for this position.  As a graduate of UMN Morris, he understands the value of a Morris education and the role that being a student-athlete plays in the collegiate experience.  I can't wait to watch Cougar Golf under his leadership.  I also want to thank Coach Jana Koehler for her 20+ years of dedication to the UMN Morris Golf program.  Jana's commitment to our golf student-athletes was second to none, and Cougar Athletics wishes her well in future endeavors."

Weatherly has served as assistant coach for the past seven seasons. During his tenure, he coached two UMAC Players of the Year, two UMAC Conference Champions, three UMAC Rookies of the Year, 13 All-UMAC First Team selections, one All-UMAC Second Team honoree, 13 All-UMAC Honorable Mentions, and eight UMAC Players of the Week.

"I am excited to have the opportunity to be the Acting Head Golf Coach," stated coach Weatherly. "To be able to teach and coach a sport that I have a great passion for and do it at my Alma Mater is a great honor. I am looking forward to working with the players to improve their game and spending time together as a team."

Before coaching, Weatherly attended the University of Minnesota Morris, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was also a member of the Cougar Baseball team for two seasons.

The Golf teams will next compete at the Twin Ports Collegiate in Superior, Wis., on September 5.
