Men’s Basketball Hosts BLC to Close Out the First Half of Conference Play

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team will host Bethany Lutheran College on Wednesday to close out the first half of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play, with tipoff set for 7:15 p.m.

The Cougars moved into first place in the UMAC after going 2-0 in conference action, improving their conference record to 4-1. Last week, Minnesota Morris defeated Crown College 90-75, with Carvin Fish recording a double-double of 28 points and 10 rebounds. In the following game, UMM bested the University of Wisconsin-Superior 80-78. Fish had another standout performance with 27 points and eight rebounds. With those performances, Fish was named UMAC Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.
 
The team's leading scorers this season have been Fish with 356 points, Kaden Pieper with 308, and Matt Thompson with 279. All three rank inside the top 10 in the UMAC, with Fish ranking second. As a team, the Cougars average 77.9 points per game, third-most in the conference, while shooting the second-best mark in the UMAC at 44.8 percent from the field. Gustav Gunderson ranks third in the conference with 69 assists.
 
Defensively, Thompson leads the Cougars with 146 rebounds, followed by Fish and Pieper with 133 and 101, respectively. The Cougars lead the conference, averaging 39.9 rebounds per game. Gunderson has a team-high 24 steals, while Fish paces the team with 22 blocks.
 
Bethany Lutheran ranks second in the UMAC with a 3-2 conference record and holds an overall record of 10-8. The Vikings split their games last week, falling 78-72 to Martin Luther College before defeating North Central University 86-69. Pat Gravin is in his sixth season as head coach of BLC. Max Briggs leads the team in scoring with 308 points, while Jack Brockmann has a team-high 129 rebounds.
