Men’s Basketball Plays Final Nonconference Games of the Season

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team travels for its final two nonconference games of the season, beginning with Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by Saint John's University on Monday at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Cougars opened Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a 106-91 victory over Martin Luther College, improving to 6-6 on the season. Kaden Pieper had a historic performance for Minnesota Morris, scoring 45 points—the second most in program history. Carvin Fish followed with 20 points.
 
Fish, Pieper, and Matt Thompson have all surpassed 200 points this season. Fish leads the trio with 266 points, while Pieper and Thompson have totaled 211 and 205, respectively. The Cougars are averaging 79.4 points per game while shooting 44.7 percent from the field. Gustav Gunderson paces the team with 50 assists.
 
Defensively, Thompson leads the team with 93 rebounds, followed by Pieper with 81. Fish rounds out the top three with 77 rebounds. Pieper leads the team in steals with 18, while Fish has recorded 12 of the team's 36 blocks.
 
In the most recent D3hoops.com poll, Gustavus Adolphus is ranked 19th. The Gusties enter the weekend with a 12-1 record, riding a 10-game winning streak. In their most recent contest, GAC defeated St. Olaf College 90-63. Justin DeGrood is in his third season as head coach. Myles Barnette leads the team with 229 points, while Carson Koch has a team-high 52 rebounds.
 
Saint John's enters the matchup with a 6-7 record and has won its last two games. The Johnnies defeated Augsburg University 84-81 and Macalester College 76-56 to start 2026. Pat McKenzie is in his 11th season at SJU. Peyton Podany leads the Johnnies with 160 points, averaging 12.3 points per game, while Charlie Theis has also reached triple digits with 115 points. Defensively, Podany leads the team with 80 rebounds and three blocks.
