Women’s Basketball Season Comes to a Close at the UMAC Semifinals

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team fell in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Wednesday night in Morris, Minn.
 
The Cougars finish the season with a record of 12-14.
 
The Yellowjackets started the scoring with a three-pointer, but Gianna Klarenbeek answered with a three of her own. Layups from Claire Stark and Maddy Grove leveled the game at 7-7. Itzel Salazar gave Minnesota Morris its first lead with a three, and Grove pushed the lead to three. The lead changed hands several times down the stretch, with Shelby Mortenson scoring, and Grace Perry knocked down a three as time expired to put UMM up 17-15.
 
The Yellowjackets opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Perry scored the first Cougar points of the quarter three minutes in with a free throw, and Mortenson added a jumper to cut the lead to one. A 10-point run by UWS had them up double digits with less than two minutes left in the half. Klarenbeek and Grove scored in the final stretch to make the score 36-27 at halftime.
 
After nearly three minutes without a point to open the third quarter, Grove scored in the paint for the first points of the period. Klarenbeek cut the deficit to six with a three-pointer. Points from Mortenson and Grove brought the Cougars within four with under five minutes left in the quarter. The Yellowjackets closed the quarter on a 16-2 run to take a 56-38 lead into the final period.
 
Baskets were traded early in the fourth, with Perry and Mortenson scoring for the Cougars. Anna Myers got on the board at the free-throw line, followed by a Mortenson layup. The run grew to five with a layup from Perry. Klarenbeek hit another three and closed the game on a six-point run, but UWS maintained its lead to secure the 68-59 win.
 
Klarenbeek led the scoring for UMM with 19 points. Grove and Mortenson followed with 12 each, and Perry reached double figures with 10. The Cougars shot 31.4 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from three, and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line. Klarenbeek also had a team-high five assists.
 
On the defensive end, Mortenson and Perry each recorded 10 rebounds. The Yellowjackets outrebounded UMM 50-39. Brooke Ver Steeg had two of the team's seven steals. The Cougars blocked seven shots, with Mortenson tallying three, Perry adding two, and Klarenbeek and Gabby Randt recording one each.
