Softball Drops Doubleheader to UW-Superior

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team fell in a doubleheader to the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 6-2 and 8-2, in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action Saturday in Morris, Minn.
 
The Cougars finish the season fourth in the UMAC with a 9-9 conference record and an 11-22 overall mark.
 
Between games, four seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program: Kennedy Biegler, Mary Landherr, Morgan Wilhelm, and Olivia Losee.

Game 1
The first four innings were scoreless. In the fifth inning, with two outs, the Cougars committed an error, and the Yellowjackets capitalized by scoring four runs. Alyssa Thornton recorded the first Cougar hit of the game in the fifth inning with a single to center field but was left on base.
 
UW-Superior added two more runs in the sixth. In the seventh, GingerAnn Lucas led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Kendra Schmitz drove her in with a double. Thornton added her second single of the game to put two runners on with one out. Kennedy Biegler then doubled to drive in another run, but it would not be enough as UMM fell 6-2.
 
The Cougars totaled five hits, with Thornton leading the way with two. Lucas, Schmitz, and Biegler each added a hit. Schmitz drove in a run and scored once, while Biegler had an RBI and Lucas also scored.
 
Thornton started in the circle and pitched five innings, striking out five while allowing no earned runs. Morgan Wilhelm pitched the final two innings, recording one strikeout and allowing two earned runs.
 
Game 2
The Yellowjackets struck first in the opening inning, scoring a pair of runs. In the bottom half, Olivia Losee singled to right field and stole second, but the Cougars were unable to score.
After UW-Superior added a run in the third, Johnson singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lucas followed with a single to drive in Johnson, putting the Cougars on the board. The Yellowjackets broke the game open in the fourth inning, extending their lead to six.
 
In the sixth, Losee singled and advanced to third on an error to start the inning. Lucas then singled to score Losee.
 
In the seventh, UW-Superior added another run in the top of the inning. Thornton and Biegler opened the bottom half with back-to-back singles. A double play left the Cougars down to their final out, and UMM left one runner on base as they dropped the game 8-2.
 
Minnesota Morris totaled seven hits in game two, with Lucas and Losee leading the way with two each. Johnson, Thornton, and Biegler also recorded hits. Lucas drove in both runs, while Johnson and Losee each scored.
 
Wilhelm started game two and pitched 3.2 innings. Marissa Anderson faced one batter and recorded an out. Thornton pitched the final three innings, striking out four and allowing no earned runs.
 
The Cougars will begin UMAC Tournament action on Thursday.
