In an evenly matched game, the Minnesota, Morris men’s basketball team dropped an 88-82 overtime decision on the road to Mayville State, Nov. 30.

Zach Meyer had 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Mayville, N.D. – In an evenly matched game, the Minnesota, Morris men's basketball team dropped an 88-82 overtime decision on the road to Mayville State, Nov. 30.

The host Comets caught fire in the extra session, scoring 20 points as they hit 8-of-10 field goals – including a perfect 2-of-2 from behind the arc – as well as connecting on each of their free throws to put the game away.

The Cougars' also had their best shooting mark of the night it the overtime session, hitting at a 63% clip, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the hot-shooting Comets. After a 34% performance from the floor in the first half, the Cougars came back in the second half to make 61% of their shots and end regulation with the scored tied.

After trailing by two, 32-30 at the break, the Cougars outscored the Comets 38-36 in the second half to head into overtime all knotted up at 68-68.

Minnesota, Morris (2-3) drops their third straight after opening the season with back-to-back victories. Mayville State (4-3), meanwhile, snaps their own three-game losing streak with the overtime win.

Once again, the Cougars were led by Steve Birman (Duluth, Minn.), who rang in a team high 25 points. Birman tops the 20-point mark for the third time in the season's first five games, while playing the entire 45 minutes.

Birman did his damage as the Cougars mounted their comeback, scoring 21 of his points in the second half and overtime.

The Comets were led by James Wiley who went 11-of-17 on the night, on his way to a game-high 27 points, while also pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Zach Meyer (Cottonwood, Minn.) led the Cougars on the boards on the night, grabbing eight. The Cougars held a slight edge over the Comets in the category, pulling down 35 to MSU's 34.

The Cougars will look to get back on track, back at home on Jim Gremmels Court on Dec. 2 as they host North Central. The Cougars and Rams are set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m., as the second part of the double header following the women's game immediately before.

When these two teams first matched up in the season opener, it was the Cougars scoring the 94-80 win on the road to start the season 1-0.
