Box Score

Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team won an overtime thriller today (Sept. 18) beating Northwestern 2-1 in the extra session.

Carrying the Cougars today was Leah Parker (Minnetonka, Minn.), who found the net twice on a pair of unassisted scoring plays.

The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Parker, who could not have picked a better time to come alive. She got her first goal of the game in the 75th minute, after her first shot was blocked off the keeper.  She then got her own rebound and put it in the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead with under 20:00 minutes left to play.

As time wound down, it looked like the Cougars would earn the win 1-0 with the end of regulation rapidly approaching. However in the 89th minute, at 89:57 to be exact, Lindsay Halverson got Northwestern on the board, evening the score with an assist from Rebekah Kirby.

The Cougars and Eagles headed into overtime deadlocked at one apiece.  Then in the extra session, in the 95th minute, Parker scored her second of the match – and her third of the weekend – notching the game winner with a scramble in front of the net. Parker found the ball and fired off a shot out of the crowd that beat the goal keeper and sent her teammates into afrenzy.

With the win over Northwestern, UMM improves 3-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in UMAC play.

UMM gets the week off from games, but will face a tough opponent in St. Scholastica next weekend on September 25th and will travel to Ashland, Wis. to play Northland College on September 26th.
