Lone Second Half Goal Leads Pipers Past Cougars

Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team lost a hard fought 1-0 game with visiting Hamline this afternoon (Sept. 4) out at Cougar Field.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, but despite the score the Piper offense managed to keep Cougar goalkeeper Emily Jacob (Minneapolis) busy. After facing a barrage of shots from St. Ben's in the season opened Wednesday (Sept. 1) night, Jacob had to fend off 12 shots from Hamline in the first half.

Although the Pipers found a way down to the Cougar end of the field, the UMM defense held tough and continually forced Hamline into bad shots, with only three landing on net. Many of the Piper attempts fell wide or went high.

The Cougars were in their defensive zone for much of the first with the Piper defense holding UMM to just one shot in the period. The Cougars did come up with two corner kicks in the half, and finished with six in the game, while holding Hamline without a corner.

In the second half the Cougars turned up the offense, outshooting the Pipers 8-to-3 in the period. A much higher tempo of game developed in the second half, with UMM controlling the pace.

Unfortunately it came after Hamline scored the game's only goal, as Natalie Cooper beat Jacob less than three minutes into the second half, at the 48:10 mark of the game. It was a long shot that Jacob just could not catch up with, as Cooper scored from the keepers left side, out beyond the 24-yard box. Cooper was assisted by Allyse Eide on the play.

The Cougars gave themselves chances in the second half with Taylor Meehan (Alexandria, Minn.) and Zoe Bergstrom (Westminster, Colo.) leading the way with two shots each. Meehan made the most of her opportunities, with each of her shots landing on the net.

In all seven different players recorded a shot for UMM in the match.

Now at 0-2 on the season, the Cougars will take Sunday off, before returning to action on Labor Day Monday (Sept. 6), back on the road, at UW-Superior. The women will be team up with the Cougar men for a double header on Monday, with the women kicking off the action at 12:00 p.m., and the men to follow at 2:00 p.m.
