New London, N.H. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team closed out their northeast road trip in fine fashion today (Sept. 5), winning each of their matches in straight sets.
The Cougars opened the day with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) win over host Colby-Sawyer, and immediately after, closed the day's action with a dominating 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-16) win over Plymouth State. Going back to yesterday's 3-1 win over Rivier College, the Cougars have now won three straight matches, and seven consecutive sets.
In the first match, Megan Theis (Shakopee, Minn.) led the way, and continued her impressive run with a team high 11 kills, her third straight match in double figures. Allie Humphrey (Minnetonka, Minn.) also finished in double figures, adding 10 kills to the UMM offense. On the day Humphrey also swung for a .350 percentage to notch a game high.
The Cougar defense was impressive all game, forcing Colby-Sawyer to hit just .024, .125 and .079 respectively in the three matches. Colby-Saywer was never able to tally double-digit kills as a team in a single set, topping out with nine in the third set. The leader for CSC, Michelle Doody, finished with just eight on the day.
The win for the Cougars was their second straight, marking their first back-to-back wins since a four-match winning streak in late October last season.
Against Plymouth State the Cougars turned in their most impressive performance of the season, and maybe their most impressive in the opener, winning 25-9. UMM hit .421 in the opening set, while holding Plymouth State to a mere -.077.
In fact, the Cougars held Plymouth State to a negative hitting percentage in each of the three sets. In the second set Plymouth State hit just -.167 and in the third set was held to only -.182.
Kaylie Clark (Garden Plains, Kans.) led the Cougars in kills for the first time on the season, finishing with eight on the day. Running the offense, Mandy Allman (Nevis, Minn.) and Nichelle Grage (Austin, Minn.) each finished with 11 assists in the match.
Next week the Cougars return home for a pair of Friday night matches on Sept. 10, hosting North Central at 4:30 p.m. and Mount Marty at 7:30 p.m. A bonus match in between for the fans, North Central and Mount Marty will square off at 6:00 p.m. Each match will be in the P.E. Center at UMM.
