Collegeville, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris men's soccer team had a rough start to the season this afternoon (Sept. 1), falling 2-0 on the road to Saint John's.
The Johnnies used a goal in each half – one just before, and one right after the break – for the final 2-0 margin. The season opener for both teams, Morris begins 2011 0-1-0 while Saint John's gets off to a 1-0-0 start.
The Cougars put the pressure on first, with a header on frame just 10 minutes in from
Devin Chuba (Elk River, Minn.). Four minutes later, a corner kick from
Matt Johnson (Monument, Colo.) led to another shot from Chuba, but again the shot landed in the hands of Johnnie keeper Mike Sikich.
The corner kick was the only attempt of the game for the Cougars, while the Johnnies took four in the first half on their way to nine in the game.
Saint John's would go on to flip the pressure and take a 10-to-5 lead in shots into the break, including the game's first goal at the 41:06 mark. Lucas Wagner sent home a Josh Whitaker pass for the eventual game winner.
Coming out of halftime, SJU wasted little time before going up 2-0, as David Wee put away a Michael Coborn pass at 52:56.
The Cougars managed another five shots in the second half, but were only able to get one on goal, while the Johnnies fired off seven in the period, with four landing on net.
For the game, the Cougars were outshot 17-to-10, with SJU holding an 8-to-4 edge in shots on goal.
Tyler Weber (Erie, Colo.) played all 90:00 minutes between the pipes and falls to 0-1 on the young season, finishing with four saves on the day. Chuba led the offense with two shots on goal, with
Greg Borchers (Westminster, Colo.) also taking a pair of shots, landing one on goal.
The Cougars will now hit the road, as they head to Colorado Springs for a pair of games on Sept. 4 and 5 against Kean and tournament host Colorado College respectively. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, and 2:30 p.m. on Monday.
