St. Bonifacious, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris women's soccer team got goals in each half en route to their 2-0 victory over Crown in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener today (Sept. 16).
Zoe Bergstrom scored just 18:00 minutes into the match to put the Cougars (3-2, 1-0 UMAC) up 1-0, and just a minute after halftime (46:02) Talyor Meehan scored to add a little insurance.
In pitching the shutout – it's second of the season – Morris held Crown (0-4, 0-1 UMAC) to just one shot attempt all match. The Cougar defense made easy work for keeper
RiAnne Metz, as she finished the day without seeing a single shot.
It was a different story on the Morris end, though, as the Cougars fired off a season high 35 on the day, landing 13 on goal. Rookie Rachel Berns led the way with seven, and four on goal, while Meehan and Ally Heidi each took five.
Megan Laird added four, and
Leah Parker and Bergstrom each finished with three, with all three of Bergstrom's landing on net.
Morris outshot Crown 17-to-1 in the first half, and posted a dominating 18-to-0 in the second half.
Corner kicks were more of the same, and the constant offensive pressure from the Cougars led to 11 in the match, while the Storm were shutout in that category as well.
The Cougars will look to make it 2-0 in the first weekend, as they take on Northwestern on Sept. 17 in primetime, playing at 7:00 p.m. at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills.
