Cougars Run Defense Controls Red Devils

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris (4-3, 4-2 UMAC) scored 20 unanswered points to overcome a 7-0 deficit to beat Eureka (4-3, 3-2 UMAC) 27-23 on the road. The Cougars held Eureka to just 37 yards rushing in the victory and sacked Sam Durley four times.
 
The Red Devils got on the board in the first quarter on a one yard run by Durley with 8:28 left in the quarter. Dustin Spohn and the Cougars answered with 3:31 left in the quarter and the PAT attempt failed. It was 7-6 in favor of the Red Devils after one quarter.
 
Dan Garrigan hit Danny Kernan with 7:00 minutes left in the half on a 40 yard pass, the two point attempt failed as UMM took the 12-7 lead. Garrigan then hit Dalton DeGraffenreid on a seven yard strike to make it 20-7 in favor of the Cougars. It was the sixth TD catch for the fresham who now has eight touchdowns in the season, with a punt and kick return touchdown. DeGraffenreid has scored in six of the seven games this year.
 
Eureka field goal kicker Travis Huber hit a 33 yard field goal as time expired cutting the lead to 20-10.
 
Kernan had another touchdown catch in the second half putting the Cougars up 27-10 after three quarters. His second touchdown catch also came from Garrigan, this time on a 23 yard strike.
 
The fourth quarter started and the Red Devils tried to make a comeback scoring on two Cody Followell touchdown catches from Durley. Minnesota Morris got the ball back with 2:10 left in the game, after an Eureka on-side attempt, and was able to run out the clock thanks to a 27 yard pass to Kernan.
 
The game featured quick scoring drives with the longest scoring drive going just 4:49. The two teams threw the ball a total of 71 times in the game. Garrigan finished 11-17 for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Leandro Dower had 92 yards on 24 attempts. Kernan finished with five catches and 125 yards.
 
Minnesota Morris will be back at home Saturday hosting Presentation in a non-conference game.
