Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris (13-6, 3-2 UMAC) hosted both Crown College (2-17, 0-6 UMAC) and Presentation (3-17) on Tuesday night in the P.E. Center coming away with a pair of sweeps. The Cougars have five players in with over 10 kills in the two matches.
Abby Tietz had 17 kills,
Emily Auch had 14 kills,
Allie Humphrey had 13 kills,
Addie Vancura had 12 kills and
Jennifer Schmidt had 11 kills.
Kaylie Clark, the UMAC Defensive Player of the Week had 32 digs in the two matches. Brook Decker led the way with 39 assists,
Mandy Allman had 31 assists.
Match 1 vs. Crown
The Cougars had another UMAC game on Tuesday night, as the Crown Storm came to town. In the first set Morris couldn't break away from the Storm until UMM scored nine straight points before Crown was able to slow them down. Minnesota Morris would keep adding to the lead extending it to 22-9 before the Storm would finally break into double digits for points. That would be as far as the Storm would be able to get as the Cougars would take the first set after a kill by
Abby Tietz would give Morris the first set, 25-10. In the first set Tietz would lead the team in kills with six, as
Kaylie Clark would lead the team in digs with 11.
UMM would continue to attack the Storm as they would start the second set off 6-0 before having a timeout called by Crown. It wouldn't stop there as the Cougars would extend their lead 12-4.
Emily Auch would then come up to serve and helped the Cougars score eight straight before the Storm were finally able to stop UMM.
Addie Vancura would come in for the final serve, for the Cougars to take the second set and win 25-7, taking the first two sets of the game.
To start the third set the Cougars would take an early 5-1 lead, before Crown was able to serve again. Crown would keep trying to come back as they would stay within four points, closing the lead two points at 9-7. Morris would pull ahead 14-10 and take control of the set from then on. The Storm tried to fight back but UMM would not let that happen and took control of the set 23-13. The final set would end when
Brooke Decker would set up Tietz for the final kill and take the game 25-15, sweeping the Crown Storm.
Match 2 vs. Presentation:
The Cougars would finish out the night with taking on the Presentation Saints, in their second match of the night. Morris would go down early, but with a kill from
Jennifer Schmidt the Cougars would get themselves on the board. They would still be down 8-5 before they would call their first timeout of the set. The timeout would make a difference as the Cougars fought back and took their first lead of the night at 10-9, and eventually 12-9 before the Saints needed to take a timeout. UMM would score 12 straight points to extend the lead to 19-9.
Brita Humphrey served 12 straight times, UMM scoring on 11 of them including four aces, is the fourth longest streak of scoring serves in NCAA Division III history. The Cougars would only allow one more point, as Schmidt would have another kill, her third of the set to end it at 25-10.
Morris would continue their attack from the first set, by going up early in the set 8-3, before the Saints would call a timeout to try and slow things down. The timeout would only help the Saints close the lead down to two points, before the Cougars would pull ahead by six and making the game 15-9, before the Saints got the ball back. The Cougars would try and keep building on the lead, getting ahead no more than six points. The Saints would keep Morris within their reach, as they tried to build momentum, even closing the game to four points. The second set would end with
Abby Tietz would get the final kill her sixth of the game, and take the game 25-20, and going up two sets to none.
In the third set the Cougars would start off the game by going up early, 6-1, before the Saints would take an early timeout in the set. A kill by
Emily Auch would put the Cougars up 8-3, and eventually extending that lead to 12-4 before the Saints would have another chance to serve the ball. Following the Saints serve,
Brooke Decker would get an ace to start off a rally of three straight points before Presentation called another timeout finding themselves down 16-5. After the timeout Decker would continue to serve helping the Cougars build a 19-5, before the momentum for Morris was stopped. Presentation start a rally closing the lead to 22-12 before a kill by
Addie Vancura would get an assist from Decker for the kill, giving the serve back to UMM.
Kaylie Clark would then send the ball over the net with the score at 24-12, to get the final point giving the Cougars another win for the night, sweeping the Presentation Saints.
The Cougars will be back at home Friday night when they take on Northwestern at 7:00 p.m.
