Cougars Get Win #21 on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars (21-9, 10-4 UMAC) swept the North Central Rams 25-7, 25-12, 25-12 early on Saturday afternoon to begin a day of two matches in the Twin Cities area. Later on in the day they took on Augsburg College falling to the Auggies 3-0 in a non-conference matchup. The 21 wins on the year is the third highest win total in school history.
 
In the match against the North Central Rams Addie Vancura led the way with 11 kills on 21 swings. Jennifer LaRoque had nine kills and Cori Becker had eight which was a career high for the freshman. LaRoque also added two solo blocks and a block assist in addition to hitting .571 on the day.
 
The Cougars defense held North Central to -.053 hitting on the afternoon. There were just five ties and four lead changes on the afternoon.
 
UMM jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first set and never looked back extending the lead to as large as 23-6. The Cougars went on a 22-5 scoring run after trailing 3-2 early in the set. In the second set Morris jumped out 10-3 and never the let Rams get back within six winning the set. The third set was closer as the Rams led 6-4 early on but after the Cougars scored 12 of the next 13 points to take a 16-7 lead. Again the Cougars proved to be too much as they went on the take the set 25-12 sealing the victory.
 
Against the Auggies the Cougars fell behind midway through the set and were unable to recover falling 25-14 in the first set. Minnesota Morris played well defensively in the second set but Augsburg took a 15-10 lead midway through the set forcing a UMM timeout. The Auggies kept the momentum and took the set 25-13 making it 2-0 after the second set.
 
Morris was up early in the third set leading 11-8 but AC rallied to tie it at 12 midway through. The Cougars responded with three points of their own forcing an Auggie timeout. Augsburg rallied to get within one at 19-18 forcing a UMM timeout and then took the lead 20-19 following the timeout. Morris was never able to recover falling 25-21.
 
The Cougars will now move in the post season where they will take on Northwestern in the UMAC Semi Finals on Wednesday
