Cougars Maim Blue Jays

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris Cougars (3-3, 3-2 UMAC) racked up 431 yards of offense on Saturday in a 54-20 win over Westminster (3-3, 2-3 UMAC). Brendan Foss had 12 catches for 182 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

The Cougars struck first blood, on a Dalton DeGraffenreid's 72 yard punt return with 9:50 remaining in the 1st quarter.

The first quarter looked like a precursor to another defensive battle by both teams but as the 2nd quarter began the Cougar offense decided otherwise. Morris drove 72 yards sparked by a big catch and run by Brendon Foss. The drive ended with a Foss touchdown and after a Cam Adel point after the Cougars would go up 14-0 over Westminster with 11:14 remaining in the half. Brendon Foss would go on to score another touchdown with 6:47 remaining in the half and after a Luke Evans interception on the Blue Jay's next drive, Roumy Desir would join the scoring party with a touchdown of his own putting the Cougars up 28-0. The Blue Jays would not go out quietly scoring with 0:15 seconds left to make the score 28-6 going in to half.

The defense would not be overshadowed by the offense in the first half. They pressured Westminster in to two intentional grounding calls in and held the Blue Jays to just 58 yards passing in the first half. Coming in the Blue Jays had averaged 320 yards through the air per game.

Westminster would score on their first drive of the second half, but UMM would answer right back with a score of their own on a Derrick Foss rushing touchdown putting the Cougars up 34-14 with 9:54 left to go in the 3rd quarter.

DeGraffenreid added another scored on a seven yard TD catch from Dan Garrigan. The defense held the Blue Jays on the next drive forcing them to punt, except the snap got away and the punter jumped on the loose ball at their own three yard line. The Cougars took over and Leandro Dower scored on a one yard run to make it 47-14.

Less than three minutes later B. Foss scored his third touchdown of the game on a ten yard throw from Garrigan.
Westminster added a score of their own with 1:17 left in the third quarter to make the final score 54-20.

The defense was led by Chad Mathiowetz who pulled in two interceptions. The Cougars held the Blue Jays to -5 yards rushing on 27 attempts.

None of the 11 combined scoring drives were over 3:18 in clock time as the scoring was fast and furious. The Cougars did not have a scoring drive over 2:11.

Next week, October 13th, the Cougars head to Illinois to play Eureka College. The game is set to kickoff at 1:00 pm.
