Cougars Hold Off Comets

Box Score MAYVILLE, N.D. – Minnesota Morris (1-3) picked up their first win of the season holding off a late charge from Mayville State (3-5). The Cougars dominated in the first half leading 38-17 but the Comets came back in the second half but missed a shot at the buzzer as the Cougars picked up the win. WATCH LIVE
 
Leading 11-10 with 13:18 left in the first half the Cougars went on an 11-2 run taking a 22-12 lead. In the final 4:30 minutes of the first half the Cougars again went on a run ending the half on a 7-2 run.
 
The lead got as large as 41-18 as the Cougars scored the first point in the second half. Minnesota Morris led by 12 midway through the second half. The Comets started their comeback going on an 8-1 run to cut the lead to five before the Cougars were able to extend the lead back to 12 with 4:48 left. With 2:32 left UMM held a 71-57 lead. The Mayville State Comets then went on a 15-7 run to cut the lead to 78-72 with seven seconds left. The Comets forced a turnover and completed a four point play to pull within two at 78-76. After Ben Hoidal hit one of two free throws the Comets got a break as Steve Birman picked up technical foul sending the Comets to the line. Austin Emerson hit one of his free throws but missed the three point shot at the buzzer as UMM held on for the win.
 
Brendon Foss led the way for the Cougars with 22 points (a career high) and 10 rebounds earning a double-double. Hoidal came off the bench and scored 15. As a team the Cougars shot 55.3% from the field and were 9-15 from behind the arc.
 
Minnesota Morris is back in action tonight taking on Presentation at 7:30 p.m.
