The Minnesota Morris men's basketball team is saying goodbye to a lot, as
Kyle Bruns,
Zach Meyer and
Derek Schmidt wrap up their careers in a Cougar uniform.
All three have been starters throughout their careers, with each finding their way into the line-ups early. Bruns and Meyer wrap up four-year careers, while Schmidt caps off a successful three-year run with the team. Consistently among the best in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), they've played in – and won – many big games, with the 2010 UMAC Tournament Championship game a common highlight.
“Definitely when we won the conference tournament my second year,” Meyer said. “We came into that game really focused and ready to play that game, and just destroyed who we were playing. So that was really fun, one of my really good memories.”
“I have really good memories from every year,” Bruns said. “But that sophomore year, that team was really special. We had a lot of team unity and it was a really fun team to play on.”
They returned to the UMAC Championship game last season, after finishing second in the regular season with a 10-4 UMAC record, the best in their careers. While they find themselves chasing this season rather than being chased, they're still in position to return to the tournament for a fourth straight season, something few teams in the conference can say.
“It's kind of fun, because the last few years we've kind of had the target on our back as one of the top teams in the league,” Schmidt said. “And now we're kind of going under the radar and it's kind of an enjoyable time. We know if we can win, we're in. And we're the underdog, we know that, but we like our chances.”
Schmidt caps off his career as the teams scoring leader at 14.2 points per game, while Meyer has also been a double-digit scorer in his career, and Bruns has started more games the last two seasons that he hasn't.
“I'm definitely going to miss it,” Bruns said. “I'll miss the student section, miss the fans, I'll miss the atmosphere.”
Before they can miss it though, they have business to attend to, as they look for one more memory in capping off their successful run.
“Three years go by very, very fast,” Schmidt said summing up his career. “So just try to enjoy one more game, and hopefully, even though were done at home, win some more on the road.”
