UMAC Season Begins Tuesday

MORRIS, Minn. – It may be cold outside but things are going to start heating up in the P.E. Center as the UMAC season is about to get underway. Minnesota Morris will welcome Crown College tomorrow night in the UMAC opener. The women will kick off the action at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 p.m. WATCH LIVE

The women come in to the game 2-7 on the year and looking to end a four game skid. The Cougars won both games against the Storm (2-5) in 2011-12 beating the Storm 70-47 on the road and 92-28 at home.

The Cougars will look to get their offense going in the familiar P.E. Center as they begin their journey for another UMAC title. The game with the Storm is the first of three UMAC contests this week as the Cougars travel to take on St. Scholastica on Friday night and Northland College on Saturday afternoon.

Kendra Wycoff is leading the team with 12.9 points per game and has been responsible for 22 of the 52 made three pointers on the year. Abby Fragodt has a balanced stat line averaging 6.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.7steals and 1.6 blocks per contest.

The key to Tuesday night's game could come down to which team can control the ball better. Both the Cougars and the Storm have at least 160 turnovers per game. The Cougars have controlled the ball better than Crown, as the Cougars come in averaging 18.5 turnovers and the Storm is averaging 26.7. In addition, the Cougars are averaging 59.2 points per game compared to the 53.8 by Crown.

The men (3-6) will look to pick their first win of 2013 after falling on the road to Valley City State on Friday night. The Storm (5-6) are coming off a 1-2 trip to Lookout Mountain, Georgia, picking up a 66-55 win on Saturday night over Johnson.

Minnesota Morris has balanced scoring on the year with six players averaging over 7.5 points per game. Brendon Foss leads the way with 10.8 points per game and Steve Birman is close behind with 10.2 points per game.

Both the Cougars and Storm are averaging nearly same amount of points per game. The Cougars are scoring 68.9 points per game and Crown is averaging 73.4. Crown did score 100 points playing against the fast paced Grinnell College team that averages 122 points per game and gives up 102.7 per game.

Like the women, Morris will also be on the road taking on St. Scholastica and Northland this weekend.
