Cougars Come Up Short

Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. - In a back and forth game, the Cougars (2-6, 2-5 UMAC) found themselves on the wrong end of the outcome, falling 35-32 to Martin Luther (3-5, 3-4 UMAC). The Cougars failed to convert three point after touchdown attempts on the afternoon, which proved costly in the loss.

Dustin Spohn had 135 rushing yards and a touchdown on the afternoon but Martin Luther had 485 yards of total offense, including 307 yards on the ground out performing the Cougars offense. Donnie Mavencamp finished the day 15-28 for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Brendon Foss had six catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

The Knights struck first, scoring on an eight yard run with 9:34 left in the first quarter.  Minnesota Morris scored two straight touchdowns to take a 12-7 lead early in the second quarter. Martin Luther responded with two touchdowns of their own to take a 21-12 lead into the half time break as the back and forth continued.

Spohn finished off a seven play drive to pull UMM within two in under 1:30 to start the second half. Mavencamp then had a 26 yard scamper giving Minnesota Morris the 25-21 lead with 7:53 left in the third quarter. Matthew Olson scored an early fourth quarter touchdown as the Knights responded and took a 28-25 lead. That lead did not last long as Mavencamp hit Tyler Peterson for a 17 yard touchdown three minutes later. Unfortunately the Cougars could not hold the lead and Martin Luther scored the go ahead touchdown with 4:35 left.

The Cougars quickly drove to the MLC 28 yard line but could go no further and turned the ball over on downs with 1:25 left in the game. Morris never got the ball back and fell 35-32. Next weekend Minnesota Morris will take on St. Scholastica in Duluth.
