Surge Puts Cougars into Championship

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. – Using a second half surge the Cougars (13-5) advanced to the UMAC Championship on Saturday with a 6-0 win over Martin Luther (12-8). Rachael Berns had two goals to lead the team offensively.

Berns got the scoring started very quickly as she flicked in a pass from Ivie Brooks in the eighth minute of play. It was the ninth goal of the year for Berns. It was a quiet remainder of the first half but it was definitely the calm before a storm.

Just over a minute into the second half Emma LaChance scored her team high 14th goal of the season. In the 57th minute Ally Heida scored her first goal of the year in her last match at Cougar Field as she bent a corner into the box and it slipped past the keeper.

In the 62nd minute of play Berns had her second goal of the match as she picked up a loose ball and flicked it over the goalie. Meaghan Delaney scored her third goal of the season as a ball rattled around in the box and then was misplayed by a defender before Delaney put the ball into the back of the net. Carly Denler set a new school record for most points by a first year player in the 85th minute with a beautiful goal on a cross from Sydney McAdam.

Morgan Delaney had two saves to complete the clean sheet in the win. The Cougars will play St. Scholastica on Saturday in the UMAC Championship. Match time will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
