GREENVILLE, Ill. – Greenville College handed the Cougars a 56-27 defeat to open up UMAC play on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota Morris led 12-7 after the first quarter but could not hold on to the lead. Antwar Ashley had the highlight of the day with a 95 yard kick return for a touchdown.
Greenville opened up with a touchdown in the opening three minutes thanks to a five play 51 yard drive. The Cougars responded with a 10 play 71 yard drive, finished off by a 12 yard Dustin Spohn touchdown run. The extra point failed but the Cougars took the lead after Ashley finished off a three play forty yard drive with a five yard touchdown run. The Cougars took advantage of forcing a Panther fumble.
After trading possessions, Greenville scored on a 46 yard touchdown run to reclaim the lead at 14-12. The Panthers would score a pair of touchdowns three minutes apart to extend their lead to 28-12. Ashley took the kickoff back for a touchdown and a successful two point conversion made it a possession game going into half.
The Panthers responded with a touchdown out of the break and then another one in the third quarter to make it 42-20. Spohn added another touchdown in the fourth cutting the lead to 15 but it would not be enough. Greenville added a pair of touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the 56-27 victory.
Spohn ended the day with 47 rushing yards. Brendon Foss had four catches for 77 yards and Tyler Peterson had seven catches for 64 yards. Caleb McLaren finished the day with 239 yards but threw three interceptions. Greenville's Brendan Chambers had 183 passing yards and 132 rushing yards on the day.
Next Saturday Morris will travel to Iowa Wesleyan to take on the Tigers at Noon.
