Defense Dominates in Win

DULUTH, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (10-6, 4-0 UMAC) took down St. Scholastica in four sets; 25-21, 27-29, 25-16, 25-19 on Sunday afternoon. The defense had 85 digs and 10 blocks on the day to lead the team. Abby Tietz had 16 kills and hit a season high .452 in the match. Kaylie Clark tied her season high with 34 digs in the match and was 28 for 28 in serve receive.
 
Three other Cougars had double digit digs including Tietz. Emily Auch and Mandy Allman each had ten digs. Auch added nine kills on the offensive side of the net. Alyssa Haugen also had nine kills. Cori Becker, Hannah Knott and Tietz each had five block assists in the match.
 
Morris had the early lead in set one and would see it grow to as much as six at 17-11. The Saints rallied late and drew within two at 22-20 forcing a UMM timeout. Out of the timeout the Cougars finished off the set with two kills from Tietz and CSS attack error.
 
The second set was back and forth throughout the whole set. Neither team had a lead larger than three the whole set and the Cougars found themselves trailing a majority of the set. UMM led 20-17 late in the set but CSS fought back and tied the set at 22. The Saints had a pair of set points but could not close out the Cougars as they would tie it at 24. Morris two set points as well but could not finish and St. Scholastica took the set 29-27.
 
Minnesota Morris jumped on the Saints in the third set and had 10-3 lead quickly. St. Scholastica never recovered and got no closer than six the rest of the way. Morris took the set 25-16.
 
UMM took another quick lead in set four as they led 10-4 out of the gate. The Cougars lead grew to as large as 22-9 but the Saints would go on a 10-2 run and fight off five set points before Morris closed out the set 25-19.
