MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (16-5) won their eighth straight match on Tuesday night, sweeping Presentation (8-13). All eight wins during the streak have come via the sweep.
Abby Tietz and
Cori Becker each had 12 kills on the night to lead the offense.
The Saints battled hard with the Cougars in first set, but Morris held a slight 8-5 advantage out of the gate. Presentation pulled within one at 10-9 before the Cougars countered to take a 14-11 lead midway through the set. A few strong defensive plays allowed the Saints to find a way to tie the match at 14. The Cougars rallied late in the set to take a 23-17 lead before finishing the set with a 25-19.
Emily Auch had four kills in the first set to lead the way.
Kayley Siekmann had eight assists alone in the set. The Cougars had three blocks in the set, as
Abby Tietz and
Mikayla Michaletz combined for all three blocks.
Brooke Decker had six digs in the first set.
Morris jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the second set. Presentation pulled within one on a couple occasions but did not tie the set until scoring five straight points after timeout to erase a 16-11 UMM lead. The Saints would take the lead late and forced a UMM timeout leading 19-17 in the set.
Out of the timeout, UMM scored three straight to take a 20-19 lead. PC quickly tied it at 20 and took a 22-21 lead after a Morris service error. Morris rallied and had a set point at 24-23 but the Saints defense kept them in it long enough to win the point. Back-to-back kills by Auch and Tietz gave the Cougars the win 26-24 in the second set. The Cougars scored just two points off Saints errors in that second set.
Despite losing a tough second set, Presentation was able to come out with some fire in the third set. They would take a 6-4 lead early in the set, as they spread out their offensive attack. The Cougars would strike back scoring five out of six points to take an 11-9 lead. Following a timeout the Saints pulled within one but could not tie the match and Morris score three straight to extend their lead to four at 18-14. Presentation never recovered and Morris won the third set 25-17.
Siekmann finished with 25 assists and eight digs.
Hannah Terhaar had a team high 24 digs. The Cougars had 61 digs in the sweep, second highest total in a three set match this year.
