MORRIS, Minn. – The Cougars (1-1) scored 100 points for the first time since January 25, 2011 as UMM beat Trinity Bible (1-5) 101-78 on Tuesday night. The Cougars scored 102 against Trinity on that day in 2011. Four Cougars were in double figures on the night including
RJ Dean and
CD Douglas who each had a team high 18.
Joe Roggenbuck had 11 points and
John Haseman had ten to round out the Cougars in double figures. Morris was 39-69 from the field on the night, hitting 56.5% of their shots. They took advantage of Trinity turnovers, scoring 27 points off their mistakes. The Cougars outscored Trinity 56-32 in the paint on the night. Nine different Cougars played at least 15 minutes in the victory.
Minnesota Morris got off to a good start, taking an early 12-3 lead. It took a while for Trinity to get back in the game but they did cut the UMM lead to four at 23-19 midway through the half. With the score 29-23, Morris went on a 23-8 run extending their lead to 21, their biggest lead of the half. Roggenbuck tipped in a shot as the time expired in the half, giving UMM a 54-36 lead at the break.
The lead stayed in the high teens for the first few minutes of the second half but Trinity did go on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to nine with 13:02 left. Morris responded and pushed their lead out 16 a couple minutes later. Trinity again found a way to cut the lead to single digits a two more occasions in the second half but never got any closer than nine. The Cougars finished the final six minutes of the game on a 19-5 run to pick up the 101-78 win.
